In physics, volume is a measure of the three-dimensional space occupied by an object. The substance inside the space can be solid, liquid or gas. The SI unit of volume is the cubic meter (m³).

Volume is also used to describe the capacity of a container, which indicates how much the container can hold - instead of the space it occupies. For example, a 10-gallon container has the capacity to hold 10 gallons of water.
