Energy
In physics, energy is a measure of the ability of an object or a system of objects to do work. Energy comes in different forms: kinetic (motion), thermal (heat), radiant (light), gravitational (gravity), electric (electricity) and other forms. Energy can be measured during the transition of an object or a system from one state into another. The SI unit of energy is the joule (J). Another commonly used SI unit of energy is the Newton-meter (N⋅m), which is the amount of energy or work (W) for a force (F) applied to move a distance (d), and is defined as W=Fd. One joule is equal to 1 N × 1 m which is the amount of energy or work for a force of 1 N applied to move a distance of 1 m.

According to the conservation law, energy may not be created nor destroyed, but any form of energy can be transformed into one or more forms. For example, a free-falling basketball's energy is transformed from potential energy into kinetic energy when it falls, and then its kinetic energy is transformed into the elastic and sound energy forms when it bounces on the floor.
