Body Shape & Waist-to-Hip Ratio
Are you an apple or a pear shape? Your body shape can provide information about your current and future health status. An apple-shaped body tends to accumulate fat around the waist and abdomen. A pear-shaped body tends to accumulate fat on the hips, buttocks and thighs. Apple-shaped people are more likely than pear-shaped people to develop health problems related to obesity. Your waist-to-hip ratio determines whether you are apple-shaped or pear-shaped. Waist-to-hip ratio is defined as the waist measurement divided by the hip measurement. The waist measurement is made at about 1 inch (2.54 centimeters) above the navel. The hip measurement is made at the widest point of hips. Men with waist-to-hip ratios of more than 1.0 are apple-shaped, while women with waist-to-hip ratios of more than 0.8 are apple-shaped.

People with lower waist-to-hip ratios would look healthier. However, pear-shaped people would have a greater weight loss challenge, in that fat accumulated in the hips, buttocks and thighs takes longer to be broken down than abdominal fat.

Measure your waist
Your waist size shows how much fat you have stored around your belly. For most adult men, a healthy waist is less than 40 in (101.6 cm). For most adult women, a healthy waist is less than 35 in (88.9 cm).
